Correspondence and manuscripts; a small amount of correspondence is written by Godfrey Sykes to Edith Kitt, Frank Lockwood and Daniel T. MacDougal. The MacDougal correspondence is related to their work together and correlates to their correspondence in MS 452. There are manuscripts by Glenton Sykes concerning 1950s trips to Mexico. There is also a manuscript by W.J. McGee entitled "Desert Thirst as a Disease." The publisher's proof copy and sketches for Godfrey's book "A Westerly Trend" are also present.

Engineer, explorer and author; Godfrey Sykes arrived in Flagstaff in 1895. He assisted Dr. D.T. MacDougal at the Carnegie Desert Laboratory from 1905 to 1933. Daniel Trembly MacDougal (1865-1958) was the leading American authority on desert ecology and one of the earliest botanists to research chlorophyll. He was the inventor of the MacDougall dendrograph, used to record changes in the volume of tree trunks. He began his association with the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) in 1899 as Director of the Laboratories. In 1904 he was named as Assistant Director.
